School started after Labor Day and ended after Memorial Day. Most telephones were on a party line (and yes the parties did ease drop on each other, but they also let us do ‘conference’ calls). Coupons were in the newspaper. Heck, there were barely chain guards! Kids walked to school. Food/shopping.
