When we bought couches shortly after our marriage, we bought used. We were able to get a great deal on older couches that were very well-built. Garage sales, estate sales, and moving sales are all great places to look for used furniture. They can be found in a number of places, from online book swaps to eBay to Amazon.

While we cannot necessarily share a roll of paper towels, a television or our couches, there are some major purchases that can be shared amongst neighborhood friends or family members without too much trouble. A magazine swap cuts paper waste and saves money. When I was growing up, two of my neighbors shared a snowblower each winter.
