Recycling is great for the environment and we should all be doing it (in spite of my title), but reusing is even better. When you can reuse or re-purpose an item, you are not only saving it from the landfills, but you are also saving the expense and energy which would have been expended when you recycle. In a similar way, buying organic local produce from farmers’ markets will cut down on the food miles and CO 2 emissions. Buying from farmers’ markets also means fresher food that’s pretty much straight from the field onto your plate! Some Christmas presents fill a practical need, and need to be bought new. Just Buy Less!

Recycle your wrapping paper. If not, make a point to save that paper this year, so that you can recycle it next December. Make your own presents. Search out the small stores in your town that sell specialty food or handmade toys. You saved all your wrapping paper from last year, right? Shop local.

Tip # 2 Recycle/reuse costumes. Search the attic, the backs of the closets, the garage and see what inspiration presents. We passed around pieces of food in the dark and told a story about how the pieces were parts of a body. What do you do to recycle/reuse on Halloween? Buy one then sell, donate or exchange it.

Re-use, recycle or re-sell. So instead of just dumping the lot, categorize your clutter into things that can be recycled, things that can be given away and things that can be sold on. You can then use that extra money to pay off some bills, treat yourself to a post-cleaning present or put it into a savings account for a rainy day fund.
