I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. I got brand new clothes , a stroller, a playpen, toys, blankets, the list goes on and on. All those items got plenty of use as all three of my kids used them. We Love to Spend Money on Our Children.

But, we also need stuff for emotional support – stuff to remind us that we are part of a generations old family, that we have accomplished significant tasks, seen impressive places and conquered difficult situations. So, it’s OK to want stuff, to get stuff, to give stuff, to use stuff, and to get rid of stuff.

Use nature – cut cedar or pine boughs from your yard or from a friendly farm nearby (ask first for heavens sake!). They kind of look like the ones for sale at Curious Country Creations. Most of us did not have air conditioned homes. People opened their windows and used attic fans or sat in metal lawn chairs outside to cool off. Most of us did not have clothes dryers, we dried the clothes on a line outside. Some of us did not have central heat. Alone or with a friend. Neighbors knew each other.

Yard sales. I happen to LOVE yard sales. I love going to them and I love having yard sales. If I have a free Saturday morning from April thru September--unfortunately it''s rare--I try to hit a community yard sale. Every year, we participate in our community''s yard sale. This was a big year to get rid of toys.
