Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. If you are in more of a hurry, find a thrift store instead. Books and DVDs.

We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). The Scary for Kids website has a couple of versions of the rhyming story you can use with the game. Once the kids left home, we ended up with zero trick or treaters at our house on a state highway.

Another benefit is that I am cutting the governments out of the loop – there no sales taxes on used stuff (except big things of course, like boats or cars).
