Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. I look for the neighborhood sales, which are usually either in spring or fall.

For small packages, find interesting magazine pages to use in wrapping. Shop garage sales and thrift stores and estate sales.

In many parts of the US, people learned to sew as part of their life skills – from parents or family or schools. I bought out a lady at a garage sale long ago, made several dresses, shirts, shorts and cover ups out of some of the material and still have a gob left over. Sewing today has dropped out of main stream life.
