School started after Labor Day and ended after Memorial Day. Young men ran out to fill your tank, check your oil, try your tire pressure and wipe your windshield when you stopped for gas. Heck, there were barely chain guards! There were lots of kids to play with (we were the baby boom after all). Kids walked to school.
