Back when I was engaged and living on my own for the first time (I lived with my parents while in grad school to save on rent), I went to the library a lot and found a copy of the Tightwad Gazette. We rent now and are much happier. People are surprised that we are in our fifties and renting, but it works for us.

Oreo Spiderweb cake There, I’d make everything from homemade bread to Steak Diane (seriously – my mom came to visit one time and bought $100 worth of beef tenderloin so I’d have leftovers – at the time, that was like 5lb of tenderloin! Hair/makeup/nails/fashion. We made a lot of Steak Diane that night.)
