School started after Labor Day and ended after Memorial Day. People read newspapers, magazines and books for entertainment. Heck, there were barely chain guards! There were lots of kids to play with (we were the baby boom after all). Kids walked to school. Alone or with a friend. Schools did not have air conditioning.
