Every merchant is assigned a category code ; if your card pays bonus rewards at grocery stores, for instance, you’ll earn those rewards any time you pay at a merchant with a category code that identifies it as a supermarket or grocery store. Bonus rewards are awarded based on where you buy something, not what you buy.
