How Our Debt Freedom Plan Prepared Us for the Pandemic. I am totally paraphrasing the year, but had it not been for the money in our emergency savings, we would most likely have used credit cards to survive. We spent the next few years building our savings back up to the level we had prior to 2007. Our first storm: 2007.

Save $10k in a savings account, specifically earmarked for medical expenses. Part of me didn’t even want to make a financial goal for 2019. The peace of mind is worth the cost. #

Pre-coronavirus, I considered having 3 months of expenses saved in cash to be sufficient. Every night my first prayer is that this virus starts to mitigate, the curve flattens to a manageable level for our health care system, and lives are saved. Emergency Savings = Last Resort. Post-coronavirus, not so much!

The backstory: In November 2019, my van was in need of new tires and I was debating on whether to get the new tires or start looking for a replacement vehicle. We had very little saved for a new-to-us car and we would have had to take out a loan to cover most of it, and that made me uneasy about purchasing the car.

In September 2019, my husband and I accomplished our biggest financial goal in our almost 20 years of marriage. It was so big that I cried for two days straight– we paid off six figures in non-mortgage debts. After the first year, the new business debt weighed on me. Our non-mortgage loans totaled over six figures.
