Happy New Year’s 2019: In January 2019, we were down to one final non-mortgage loan, so we created just one financial goal for the year—-to pay off that last non-mortgage debt by December. He makes it really simple and you should Google it if you haven’t heard of his steps. We also didn’t feel comfortable with Dave’s suggestion of a $1000 starter emergency fund, which is his step #1. But $1000 was not nearly enough money to cover sudden emergencies in both our home and business.

Our emergency fund. I am totally paraphrasing the year, but had it not been for the money in our emergency savings, we would most likely have used credit cards to survive. We reduced our spending where we could, but the money to pay any shortfall each month came from our emergency fund. It kept me up at night.

I have written often about the importance of an emergency fund. We’ll concentrate on numbers 1 – 3, so we can make our emergency savings last as long as possible. If and when we get a stimulus check, the first priority will be making sure our essentials are covered. Cash is King.

Did you make a goal to pay off debt this year? It took us years to pay it all off, but we achieved it in 2019. I couldn’t imagine making the monthly payments for the full term of the loans, so I concocted an idea to pay them off early and wrote our Debt Freedom Plan. 3 – Set your guidelines for the year.

Did you make 2018 financial goals ? We even bought an online package years ago, but have since decided that we will have a lawyer draw up our will, medical directive, and power of attorney documents to make sure everything is in place legally. If not, we’ll start saving in 2019. Move up the Student Loan Payoff Date.

In September 2019, my husband and I accomplished our biggest financial goal in our almost 20 years of marriage. With that much debt, we needed some go big or go home heavy hitters that would make a big impact on debt reduction. It was so big that I cried for two days straight– we paid off six figures in non-mortgage debts.
