We aren’t the first generation of my family to include multiple generations on trips though. We took my Mom with us to Florida in the 1980’s. Start early.

Wouldn’t it be fun to have a place where our sons, their wives and our grandchildren could come together to play, visit and bond? If we hadn’t sold stocks and mutual funds to come up with the money to close the sale (cash on the table), we wouldn’t have generated a huge capital gain in 2007.

Naturally, my spouse and I had a discussion on how much we wanted to fund for our two sons and their families. I found pleasure in thinking about giving our children and grandchildren the opportunity to see part of the world they might not otherwise see. One son is trying to rebuild finances after an expensive year. I doubt it.

Daughters and sons of very wealthy families sometimes want to disown the family wealth in order to prove themselves. The Grandkids are 9 and 12 now with lots of time before they have to start supporting themselves somehow. It didn’t. I didn’t even realize that most jobs required a doctorate in Psychology to really use the knowledge in a career. I ended up as a retail management trainee – just to get some kind of paycheck.
