We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). Encourage your child to use their imaginations to come up with a costume out of materials on hand at home. This idea serves well for the younger crew. No kids = no money on candy = no candy wrappers in the landfill.

Have a big box ready to take the throw-away items and another for anything that is good enough to go to the local thrift store. I found I had more spare time to spend with the family as well.
