And while I don’t like parting with our money, I am grateful that this repair won’t send us into financial distress. We have already set up a pretty nice life together, and have made some pretty big financial commitments jointly. We bought a house in 2012; we both have fulfilling careers and we have two little dogs that we consider fur babies. Despite our intertwined lives financially, we hadn’t combined finances up until recently.

You might be saving up for a vacation, while at the same time building up your emergency fund and creating a fund for car maintenance and repairs. Take a look at your financial goals, and create sub accounts that allow you to focus on these different objectives. I do this with my emergency fund.

To ease my anxiety about our new loans, we took the Financial Peace University home course and it changed how we thought about debt. We loosely based our plan on Dave Ramsey’s 7 Baby Steps, but modified them to address our needs and lifestyle. Our 2019 Financial Goal. We can now move on to other financial goals.

He calls it his 7 Baby Steps. We also didn’t feel comfortable with Dave’s suggestion of a $1000 starter emergency fund, which is his step #1. The point of the starter emergency fund is to get you through until you pay off your non-mortgage debts, at which point, you build a more extensive fund.

Did you make 2018 financial goals ? My husband and I discussed some ideas over our holiday break and we decided on 2 solid must-achieve financial goals for the year. If we complete them early, we’ll move on to 2 additional goals that are on our radar. Save a starter Home Emergency Fund.

We adapted Dave Ramsey’s 7 baby steps to reflect our lifestyle as self-employed small business owners. Our current savings is not at a true emergency fund level of 3-6 months, but further down our plan, we will save up to that level. What financial goals are you working towards?
