We have a gift-giving line in our budget, but when I sat down to create my own budget, I realized that our original amount just didn't cover all of the expenses from this past year. I've never been diligent about transferring the Christmas money into a separate account. Also let us know how you saved the money. It's awesome.

I have now decided to add gift giving to the list of cash categories. I then divided that new number by 12 and that is the dollar amount that I am going to transfer to a savings account every month. I'll use that money through out the year for birthday gifts along with Christmas presents in December.

She has gotten cash in the past for her birthday or Christmas, but she would have preferred a toy so I have deposited the money in her savings account. We want her to give a portion, save a portion and she can spend the rest. This was literally the first conversation we have had about money. Do you have kids?
