How much debt did you pay off? What kind of debt was it? I had $56,000 of debt when I decided to become debt free. I had $29,000 in MBA student loans, $14,000 in credit cards, and $13,000 in a car loan. I had planned to pay it all off in 2.5 Simply doing a budget.

There were two things that inspired us to pay off debt. I knew I was going to be a stay at home mom when we had kids and since we were both teachers, we simply could not afford for me to stay home, unless we got rid of something big in our budget. Prior to FPU, we thought we were doing well financially and never considered that we had too much debt. We didn’t carry over credit card balances, we paid off our car notes early, and the interest rate on the student loan was at a low 2.75%. At that time, we didn’t consider all debt to be dumb.

How much debt did you pay off? What kind of debt was it? After my first marriage fell apart, I ended up with over $14,000 of consumer debt, made up of a car loan and credit cards. It took just over a year (14 months to be exact) before I paid off all my debts and became debt free!
