Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. I look for the neighborhood sales, which are usually either in spring or fall.

For me, going to sales is not just a means to find things I need at rock bottom prices, it is also entertainment. Neighborhood sales are my favorite, and they are prolific in spring and fall. Here is a short list of some of my favorite finds at garage, estate and thrift store sales. Outdoor bench (I refurbished it) $5.

Buy a dated, smooth-gliding rocker at a garage sale for next to nothing and customize it with several yards of fabric and a staple gun. Give that set of sturdy, bright orange bookshelves new life with several coats of white paint. The woodwork doesn’t need to match exactly, instead choose pieces based on price and function.
