I have written often about the importance of an emergency fund. We had such a sense of freedom after making that last payment and we let ourselves dream about some tangible goals that we sacrificed during those payoff years, such as travel and a new-to-us camper. We have more important things to do with our money besides sending a large portion of it to the creditors every month. We have a retirement to plan , our daughters’ college to save for, and many places to visit. So those new boots I want will have to wait, and besides I have two pairs that will get me through another winter.

I want to challenge myself to rethink our purchases by taking advantage of more cost effective solutions, like borrowing, buying second hand, or just making do with what we already have. Save a starter Home Emergency Fund. It’s not quite 3-6 months of expenses, but will do until we get to #6. 2017 Update.
