I created it as a way to communicate our finances to my husband. One January, we received a very large credit card bill in the mail. I knew it was coming because we hadn’t planned for all of the gifts we bought in December and used a credit card to pay for them.

We paid our bills on time, never carried credit card debt from month to month, but in that moment we could not pay our bills. At my age, my parents had 20 years of kid-free living ahead of them to focus on their own career goals and to save for their retirement. We are communicating regularly.
