Stressed out, we ventured into Dave Ramsey’s online Financial Peace University home course for help. We also didn’t feel comfortable with Dave’s suggestion of a $1000 starter emergency fund, which is his step #1. But $1000 was not nearly enough money to cover sudden emergencies in both our home and business.

To ease my anxiety about our new loans, we took the Financial Peace University home course and it changed how we thought about debt. From what we learned in the course, we wrote our Debt Freedom Plan. 1 – Save a starter Home Emergency Fund. And for context, you might want to read through the list of posts above.

My retirement account contribution, emergency fund contribution, car payments, utility bills, and mortgage are all set up so that they are paid automatically each month. Of course, this spending plan method only works in my family because our wants are fairly modest so we don’t exceed our income each month.

I wasn’t doing anything wrong back then; my family lived within our means, we had an emergency fund, and we were saving for retirement and our son’s college costs. It’s about those things that my now self would probably want to give my then self a swift kick in the pants for motivation.

Last year, my husband and I took Dave Ramsey’s online Financial Peace University course. Save $$$ Home Emergency Fund – Dave suggests to start at $1000, but being self-employed, ours is much higher, but it is not quite 3-6 months of expenses. Start college funds for our two girls. Our Debt Freedom Plan.
