Instead, I look for creative ways to save my family money in all aspects of our lives. My goal has always been to live well on less while achieving our big financial goals. 2 – We opened up high-interest savings accounts and earned $250 in interest. Frugal living is not about deprivation.

After that first update we thought our daughter was in the clear and our medical drama was behind us. However, that all changed the end of November when my daughter called me from school that she had a reoccurrence. We had high deductible health plans from 2004 – 2016 and contributed many years to a health savings account.

Our daughter is 24 and was adopted from Eastern Europe when she was one week short of a year old. He married the love of his life almost two years ago, so now we have a daughter-in-law, too. Now I wish those dollars had gone into our savings accounts. Our son is 29 and biological. Alan doesn’t share that regret.

Being self-employed, we have a higher starter fund on hand and when we pay off our non-mortgage debt, we will save to at least 6 months expenses and maybe even more.
