Many years ago, my husband and I faced what we thought was an insurmountable hurdle– six figures of non-mortgage debts. Stressed out, we ventured into Dave Ramsey’s online Financial Peace University home course for help. Prior to FPU, we thought we were doing well financially and never considered that we had too much debt.

Our Debt Freedom Plan has been a long winding road. The journey started in 2012 when we bought an office building for our business and then found ourselves with a lot of debt and not enough cash flow. To ease my anxiety about our new loans, we took the Financial Peace University home course and it changed how we thought about debt.

That was the year that we made the goal of paying off the last of our non-mortgage debts and we achieved it by September of that year. I cried for days and we celebrated the occasion with a family cruise a few months later. Also that year, I wanted to create an In Case of Emergency (ICE) binder for my family.

I live in the Midwest with my family. I have 11 kids, ages 9-29, and two cats. I like to bake and read, and I spend time chauffeuring kids to activities and games. I volunteer at my kids’ school at lunch time and other events. I want my family to have what they need and be comfortable.

The strategies did keep us out of debt however, and instilled in us habits of self-reliance, attitudes of ‘we can do that’ and a measure of life-long thriftiness that we might not otherwise have had. By cutting my hubby’s and kid’s hair we saved $520 a year for 10 years ($5280). 40,720 Home Repair.
