I’ve seen the nieces and my own kids ask for and get babysitting services time after time from a busy working boomer. In my experience, my kids expect more of me for their kids than I expected of my parents for mine. It never occurred to me to ask Mom or Mom-in-law to come watch my kids.

My mother grew up on a farm, and from her accounts my grandmother and grandfather (who also was a foreman at the local glass factory, along with being an independent farmer) were frugal, and sometimes times were tight. Even if we don’t end up using all the food we buy, it’s cheaper than eating out. Not at all.
