Stressed out, we ventured into Dave Ramsey’s online Financial Peace University home course for help. Prior to FPU, we thought we were doing well financially and never considered that we had too much debt. We also didn’t feel comfortable with Dave’s suggestion of a $1000 starter emergency fund, which is his step #1.

In September 2019, my husband and I accomplished our biggest financial goal in our almost 20 years of marriage. Our business was doing very well, and we were excited about the opportunity to own a property outside of our home. It was so big that I cried for two days straight– we paid off six figures in non-mortgage debts.

Our extra funds went towards our cash flow. At that time, I couldn’t cash flow the office budget, home budget, our loans, and retirement savings. He went back to school at the age of 34 to pursue a new career and has not regretted it, but his student loan was about the size of a small home mortgage when he graduated in 2000.

Kelvin and I just celebrated 10 years of marriage last November. I own a software consultancy that I run from home and my husband is a letter carrier with the post office. We have 2 girls that I am home schooling this year. When we had our first child, we both agreed it would be best for me to stay home as long as possible.

Ryan is a high school math teacher and also officiates college basketball (November thru March). Our plans for me to be a stay at home mom on one teacher salary.
