About $52,000 of that $147K was consumer debt (credit cards, a student loan, a car loan, a home improvement loan, etc.) From start to finish it took us a very long time — I would guess 10 years. But it wasn’t a decade of nothing but paying off debt. Then my husband decided to pay off his car.

We saved any that we could from my husbands checks, we sold things from around the house on craigslist and ultimately we started taking everything we earned from our photography business which was a normal part of income for us and used it all on debt. If married, who initiated the debt free goal? Which we love!
