I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. I’ve seen friends of mine spend hundreds of dollars per season on their infants.

Another source of clutter with kids is gifts that well-meaning friends and relatives give. I have a soft spot for good sales, whether they be at the local retail store (I bought way too many Gymboree shirts for my daughter when they were on sale for $3.99) or at a garage sale. But, we also need stuff for emotional support – stuff to remind us that we are part of a generations old family, that we have accomplished significant tasks, seen impressive places and conquered difficult situations. I like my stuff and I refuse to acquiesce to the guilt trips imposed by others. Humans need stuff. You want stuff.

There have been countless times I have seen nearly new, decorator pieces being sold for pennies on the dollar at garage sales because the homeowner decided to re-decorate. Instead of taking the family to a movie, have a home movie night with friends and family. I grew up with this, in theory and in practice.
