Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. If you are in more of a hurry, find a thrift store instead. Typical garage sale prices are $.25

From TVs to gaming systems to phones, buying used can make a great deal of sense, whether you buy used from someone you trust, or whether you buy factory-refurbished , this a good options. Garage sales, estate sales, and moving sales are all great places to look for used furniture. We’ve bought used video games as well.

We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). Search the attic, the backs of the closets, the garage and see what inspiration presents. Dad’s old cowboy hat and a rope from the garage can be the start of a cowboy get up. Tip # 2 Recycle/reuse costumes.

Here is a short list of some of my favorite finds at garage, estate and thrift store sales. I used an old seat cushion I had and wrapped it with brand new material from another garage sale to pretty it up and make it softer, then stacked new throw pillows I found at yet another sale for $.50 Glass leftover containers 3 for $.75.

However, I wait until spring and summer to buy decorations – and get them at garage sales. On their personal finance site, US News suggested that some kids get games they don’t want and can’t be returned. I always shop for Christmas wrapping paper, gift tags, boxes and really nice ornaments the week after Christmas.

My favorite thrift store has a section dedicated to seasonal items. The number and variety of Halloween items in this thrift store surprised me. A couple of days ago on one of my visits, I noticed 2 entire clothing racks filled with Halloween costumes and/or clothing items. Louis suburbs but had similar experiences with Halloween.
