As long as we buy them from an authorized source, we can get a guarantee as well. We bought a lot of our son’s onesies and other items (including a crib) at a consignment shop. We were able to get a great deal on older couches that were very well-built. We’ve bought used video games as well. Baby Items.

I also occasionally get to encourage young entrepreneurs by purchasing their wares (usually soda or lemonade but sometimes more ambitions products as well). Another benefit is that I am cutting the governments out of the loop – there no sales taxes on used stuff (except big things of course, like boats or cars).

I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. There was very little I had to buy for my child after these showers.

I made a set of short drapes for my son’s room by simply putting a hem all around the fabric and attaching a tape at the top that let me insert hooks that made the pleats form. I believe that your opportunity cost would be too great as well. Some of these kinds of projects also require minimal skills. Sewing takes time.
