She envisioned me running out of gasoline and not being able to get home. As an adult, I use both cash and credit as well as checks. Occasionally merchants will discount the price because they don’t have to pay the credit card fees on your purchase. At the time, I didn’t have credit cards so it was a valid concern.

Even according to boating sites, like Discover Boating , the costs are high: “In 2012, the average retail price of an outboard boat was $20,387. The average retail price of an outboard boat package (boat,engine and trailer) was $32,795.” No one was buying used boats during the recession. Boating is fun.
