I made some foolish choices shortly after graduating college, burning through my savings and running up credit card bills. We bought our house in March 2009, during some of the worst of the recession and the housing bubble bursting. What’s the “why” behind your money-saving efforts? What’s your best frugal win?

I graduated from State U with a liberal arts degree in the early 1970s – when there was a world wide recession followed by stagflation. But, at least I graduated without debt. My newly won degree brought no lucrative job. I accepted a management trainee retail job which paid poorly and had little advancement opportunity.

When the Great Recession began in 2008/2009, my boss at the time (a Vice President of the company) and her spouse consulted their financial adviser to see what they should do. They asked him what would likely cause us to come out of recession. Recent graduates were also hard hit. ” The tired of scrimping effect.

Degrees are very expensive and in this post recession economy, don’t necessarily guarantee the best return on your dollar. Don’t despair if you (or perhaps your children) aren’t planning on earning a four year college degree. There are interesting entry level jobs to which someone without a college degree can aspire.

While there are many reasons why adult children could be living with their parents, right now most of the blame falls on the economy and the recession. The recession has made it more difficult than usual for new graduates to find gainful employment, especially with experienced workers finding themselves unemployed for months or even years.
