Although I live 200+ miles away from my two grandkids, I try to get them for a week or so during the summer. There are many documented benefits to utilizing grandparents to watch grandkids. Among them may be reduced risks of alzheimers ; increased brain power , and lowered possibilities of depression. I’m one of them.

Daughters and sons of very wealthy families sometimes want to disown the family wealth in order to prove themselves. Some grown children move thousands of miles away and change their names in order to avoid the ‘taint’ of the wealth and family name. They may be offering it for their own benefit, more than yours.

She is soon to be 92 years old and uses her position as the family matriarch to teach the rest of us to be grateful. When she saw that her great-grandchildren were not writing thank you notes for her gifts to them, she sent their parents a set of Thank you note cards with envelopes and postage! She is spunky and outspoken.

Many well to do families have been counting on this as a way to pass along significant wealth to their next generations. If they are primary beneficiaries, the parents or guardians may have to go to court and get themselves designated as able to manage the account for the child. Roth IRA contributions are made post tax.

The Grandkids are 9 and 12 now with lots of time before they have to start supporting themselves somehow. After 10 years raising kids, I decided to re-enter the workforce. Many of you may have followed a similar unplanned path to your job or career. It didn’t. At the time we were substantially poor.

But you are a super busy parent, with work, continuing education, business travel, your kid’s other activities, church and the myriad of other things that demand your time and attention. Kids this age can start to learn that we can get things by trading. At the grocery store.

In my family we make Christmas lists. My Grandparents have lots of kids and even more grandkids. Add in the spouses, significant others and now great-grandchildren and that’s a ton of gifts. However, there are always family members that deviate from the list and get you something random.
