One of our sons lost a job during the 2009 recession. They were supporting a young son of hers. We could have stepped in and covered their expenses for a year, but we felt that it was supremely important that our son and his wife overcome their struggle them selves.

In 2008-2009 when we had the credit crunch and recession, there was at least one day when stores were not accepting credit. We took a day trip to a small town in our area several years ago with our grown son and daughter-in-law. Gas stations, some hotels, some restaurants are examples of places you might negotiate a cash discount.

I graduated from State U with a liberal arts degree in the early 1970s – when there was a world wide recession followed by stagflation. My son won his 4 year degree in Economics and then was able to get a job as a security guard at a retail store! My newly won degree brought no lucrative job.
