Those affected by our recent Great Recession have had the benefits of saving reinforced as well. As a well salaried professional, I started spending again – on home remodeling, on college expenses for the kids and on travel. I also saved – maxing out 401K contributions to build up the retirement funds.

We individual investors have all become market skittish since the recent huge recession and economic downturn. Unfortunately, to move them, I had to cash some the investments out in the 401K, leaving me with quite a few funds to get back into the market. It’s hard for me, emotionally to avoid trying to time the market.

Hubby is one of those lucky few that actually has a pretty safe pension – one that also comes with health plans (which cover me as well) – so calculating his was easy. Then the Great Recession hit so I postponed for a few years. In 2010, my company was just preparing to do their first round of recession related layoffs.
