For me, it was one of my great aunts and uncles who lived at one end of a dirt road, down from my grandfather. The road connected the big white house of my great aunt and uncle, my grandfather’s house and the house of another great aunt and uncle that didn’t even have running water – they brought in water from a well in the yard!

Of course, later on I did get some really nice real dolls from my St Louis Aunts. There is a plant called poke that the mountain folks used for greens, but the kids had another use for that plant. All they had to do was find some pony poop and plant it! it was A-OK with me. The kids fell for it hook, line and sinker.
