My mom hosts Thanksgiving. She also roasts the turkey and makes the gravy and the stuffing, but my aunts, uncles, and cousins all bring a dish and/or dessert to round out the meal. Okay, maybe pumpkin pie, chocolate pecan pie, and apple pie piled on a plate with whipped cream dolloped on top.

Over 5% of American moms are struggling financially and have rinsed out and reused soiled diapers on their child, according to Huggies’ website. My aunt and uncle never had a lot of money to donate to their church, but every weekend they volunteered to help set up for weddings or clean up after them in the church hall.

After all, I have many aunts and uncles who winter in Florida, so I would have family nearby and my mom could come to visit to escape the Michigan cold. We were taken aback but decided we could move to Florida for a few years so my husband could finish his post-doc with his mentor.

We’re fortunate to have an aunt and uncle who love to have the latest electronics and cameras. My mom got a new bed a few years ago, so we bought her old bed frame and mattresses for $50. Rather than spending money buying clothes in a new size every few months, I bought at garage sales and thrift stores. Electronics.

We leave the nest – move out of Mom and Dad’s well stocked home. Some get stuff from stores, the less financially favored head for thrift stores, garage sales, Mom’s house or the trash pickup routes. My Aunt and Uncle (now in their 90’s) held a ‘living estate sale’ about 20 years ago.

My dad taught my mom how to drive manual, my uncle taught my aunt, my fiancé even taught his ex how to drive manual. Last year I bought a manual car for $14k in cash, thinking I would learn to drive manual. Manual cars are generally cheaper than automatic and have better gas mileage because they are lighter weight).
