My son recently became very interested in Star Wars, so we threw him a Star Wars-themed party for his birthday this year! It’s always a challenge to find the balance between wanting to give your child the most amazing birthday ever and working with your realistic budget. And this year, our budget was lower than ever.

I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. There was very little I had to buy for my child after these showers.

Step platform with 2 steps – purchased at a garage sale for $2. since passed it along to one of my sons as I no longer jog (hurts the old knees). Exercise bike – a birthday gift from hubby about 20 years ago. Chest strap style heart rate monitor – I bought this when I was jogging and spent about $60 on it!

May starts Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day and ends with Memorial Day—a weekend that’s become a shopping sales bonanza. Happy Birthday America!

Depositing each and every birthday and Christmas gift check in the bank. Buying personal finance books at garage sales and reading them one after another to make sure you have a basis of knowledge on money management. My son declined to do it for her until after she had tried and tried again.
