Recently, an extended family trip to Hawaii got put on hold due to costs. As it turns out, my estimate for a 2 week trip to Hawaii (one week on Oahu and one on the Big Island) would have been over $20,000 US Dollars. Even the New York Times acknowledges that: As boomers join the ranks of grandparents, many are financing vacations for their children and grandchildren. My WWII era uncle and his wife made trips annually with one of their 4 grandchildren (a different one each year). We took my Mom with us to Florida in the 1980’s.
