People opened their windows and used attic fans or sat in metal lawn chairs outside to cool off. There wasn’t a restaurant on every corner and people didn’t eat out much. Out of season produce, if available at all, was super expensive. Gasoline stations did not serve food, have coffee or provide bath rooms.
