People opened their windows and used attic fans or sat in metal lawn chairs outside to cool off. Stores like Sears and JC Penney sent out free merchandise catalogs 3 inches thick and people ordered their stuff from those if they couldn’t find it in a store. Gasoline stations did not serve food, have coffee or provide bath rooms.
