Around here January and February are the depths of winter – cold, snowy and blowy, so the arrival of the catalogs is a welcome diversion. We have ordered everything from trees to blueberries; from seeds to bulbs and roots via catalogs.

How Growing Your Finances Is Like Gardening

Our two biggest experiences were in planting thousands of pine seedlings from the state nursery on our 40 acre farm (in our younger years)and planting around 3000 spring flowering bulbs on our current 6 acres. Hubby likes to apply nutrients to the soil , as well as additives that break up our clay – in areas he is planning new plantings. We live on the edge of the prairie and have planted native garden plants such as ornamental grasses.

The Peach Tree Battle

History In 2006 I planted fruit trees, in anticipation of retiring and having time to pick and use the harvest. I ordered them from a nursery catalog and paid a total of about $95 for four trees. I planted them that fall, a dwarf pie cherry, an Elberta peach, a Lodi apple and a Braeburn apple. Plant blueberries instead!
