Every January we are inundated with seed, plant and flower catalogs. Around here January and February are the depths of winter – cold, snowy and blowy, so the arrival of the catalogs is a welcome diversion. We have ordered everything from trees to blueberries; from seeds to bulbs and roots via catalogs.

At our house the gardening catalogs started arriving last week. Burpee’s, Henry Fields, Stark Brothers, K Van Bourgondien & Sons, Van Enselen inc, John Scheepers Inc, Gurney’s, Henry Field’s, and Jung Seeds & Plants have all arrived in our mailbox (we are on a lot of lists!). Plan your garden.

My spouse and I have gained quite a bit of experience planting bushes, trees and flowers over the years. Our two biggest experiences were in planting thousands of pine seedlings from the state nursery on our 40 acre farm (in our younger years)and planting around 3000 spring flowering bulbs on our current 6 acres. So do finances.

None of the trees have produced much fruit in the 5 years since I planted them. Hubby likes to apply nutrients to the soil , as well as additives that break up our clay – in areas he is planning new plantings. We live on the edge of the prairie and have planted native garden plants such as ornamental grasses.

History In 2006 I planted fruit trees, in anticipation of retiring and having time to pick and use the harvest. I ordered them from a nursery catalog and paid a total of about $95 for four trees. I planted them that fall, a dwarf pie cherry, an Elberta peach, a Lodi apple and a Braeburn apple. Plant blueberries instead!

Recently we were invited by Uncommon Goods to stock our holiday Gift Pantry with three items from their inspiring, eclectic catalog. It''s always a delight to browse through their catalogs and I must confess that confining my choices to just three Gift Pantry items proved surprisingly difficult. Why Uncommon Goods ? Okay, I LOVE these.

I'm starting to get gardening catalogs and my mood brightens up when I find them in my mailbox. I know I won't be able to plant anything for several weeks, but maybe just looking through my books and magazines will remind me that warmer days are coming. It was 29 degrees. Just looking at this picture, brings a smile to my face.
