I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. I’ve seen friends of mine spend hundreds of dollars per season on their infants.

My husband and I aren’t constant consumers. Another source of clutter with kids is gifts that well-meaning friends and relatives give. I have a soft spot for good sales, whether they be at the local retail store (I bought way too many Gymboree shirts for my daughter when they were on sale for $3.99) or at a garage sale.

In the fall, after first frost, I pick interesting looking grasses, with seed heads intact and bunch them into 4” wide 12 “ tall stand up decorations – just by tying a Christmas ribbon around them in the middle. They kind of look like the ones for sale at Curious Country Creations. Save On Holiday Decorating. These make nice gifts too.
