I have always thought that “Christmas in July was a catch phrase made up by department stores to sell things in the slow summer months. . Apparently, according to multiple sources such as The Holiday Spot website, Wikipedia and various responders on Google Answers there really are actual Christmas celebrations in July.

I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. I’ve seen friends of mine spend hundreds of dollars per season on their infants.

In the fall, after first frost, I pick interesting looking grasses, with seed heads intact and bunch them into 4” wide 12 “ tall stand up decorations – just by tying a Christmas ribbon around them in the middle. They kind of look like the ones for sale at Curious Country Creations. Save On Holiday Decorating. These make nice gifts too.

Another source of clutter with kids is gifts that well-meaning friends and relatives give. I have a soft spot for good sales, whether they be at the local retail store (I bought way too many Gymboree shirts for my daughter when they were on sale for $3.99) or at a garage sale. We use the eggs, harvest meat & if I can’t get out to hunt venison we’ve had friends give us meat. I was born frugal, into a super frugal family.
