Concerts, I learned I don’t really enjoy, but I do love musicals and plays, so I’ve started asking for tickets as birthday or Christmas presents.

How Little Could You Spend on Your Child in a Year?

I got brand new clothes , a stroller, a playpen, toys, blankets, the list goes on and on. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. Garlick got all of her children’s clothes and gear from friends, family, and sites like Freecycle.

Use paper drop cloth to wrap. If you are like me, you have old material or clothing that is no longer loved or needed. Shop garage sales and thrift stores and estate sales. Three years ago, I bought a bag of new holiday ribbons that would have cost me upwards of $50 if I had purchased them from a retail store.

Growing up in the 1950?s

Most of us did not have clothes dryers, we dried the clothes on a line outside. Christmas gifts were precious, opened one at a time taking turns, and then examined by everyone present before the next guy got to open theirs. There was no polyester clothing. Clothing had to be ironed to look good. People dressed up.

At year end and back to school time, we drew down the tiny savings we had managed to put aside to pay for life insurance, buy Christmas presents and back to school clothes (which were typically bought second hand from the thrift store).
