Years ago, we rented a unit in one of two quadruplex buildings owned by our landlord. Our rent back then was (adjusted for inflation) around $550 – a big bite out of our $35,000 gross salary – especially when we were trying to save a down payment for a house, start a college fund for each of our two boys and pay off a loan we had.
