Usually, if we fly somewhere and then rent a car, we just get the smallest (least expensive) type available. Most rentals are for the business week.

Avoid holidays and peak travel times when prices can be inflated. I saved 25% on a cabin in Gatlinburg using a code our favorite rental company releases every July. Another cost to factor into flying is whether or not you’ll need a rental car when you arrive at your destination. It’s too risky.

Our rental season is pretty much limited to 2 weeks in June, all of July and 2 weeks in August – sometimes with a holiday or two thrown in. I was counting on an average of 4 months rentals. Rental management companies may not distribute rental days evenly. Do you have a vacation rental?
