People opened their windows and used attic fans or sat in metal lawn chairs outside to cool off. Most telephones were on a party line (and yes the parties did ease drop on each other, but they also let us do ‘conference’ calls). Gasoline stations did not serve food, have coffee or provide bath rooms. Go Frugal'
