Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. Finding a new purpose for an old item is one of the joys of finding bargains at garage sales.

Of course, there are some tasks that you should leave for the spring. Even re-organizing the garage can leave you with a chill. If you plan to re-organize your closet and drawers, take the opportunity to go through your clothing and sort it into “keep”, “discard” and “donate” piles.

While I appreciate the thought, those toys don’t get used often, and I feel bad donating them or giving them away. Of course, the kids aren’t the only ones to be blamed. If something is cheap at a garage sale, I may buy it even if I’m not sure that I’ll use it.

Fashion changes and new or nearly new clothing gets sold at sales or donated to charity. Another benefit is that I am cutting the governments out of the loop – there no sales taxes on used stuff (except big things of course, like boats or cars). Here is a short list of some of my favorite finds at garage, estate and thrift store sales.

They had a rule that, if they started a new hobby, activity or sport, their kids had to see it through and stay with it for the full season or course or school year, depending on what it was. Sometimes parents donate the goods but often you will get the price they sell for, with the club keeping a small percentage as a fundraising activity.

Of course, to protect the glass and window/door hardware you have to tape and paper it. There is a lovely thrift store not far from my neighborhood that receives donations from the folks in the local golfing gated community. I had to part with $35 to buy one of those paint masks to even be able to apply it.

Brian is very good at living below his income, and that has made a big difference in our ability to stay on budget in general over the course of our marriage. Hosting garage sales & reselling items. Being married to someone who is a natural saver has saved me the most money. Yes to both!
