I have a soft spot for good sales, whether they be at the local retail store (I bought way too many Gymboree shirts for my daughter when they were on sale for $3.99) or at a garage sale. If something is cheap at a garage sale, I may buy it even if I’m not sure that I’ll use it.

We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). My daughter-in-law came up with this idea, buying bulk pumpkins and bulk flowers. No kids = no parties or haunted houses = money saved. Tip # 2 Recycle/reuse costumes. Buy one then sell, donate or exchange it.

She also scarfed up any other gift wrap that looked usable, and she stored it carefully away for use the next year. My 5 year old grand daughter did it last year in my Grandma Rie’s Money Camp. Some retail stores do still give out gift boxes for free, always check if you are buying in a brick and mortar store.

Another benefit is that I am cutting the governments out of the loop – there no sales taxes on used stuff (except big things of course, like boats or cars). Here is a short list of some of my favorite finds at garage, estate and thrift store sales. I’ve seen similar ones (Razors) for sale for $40 new.

I was introduced to the idea of Resurrection Eggs when my first daughter was very young. I found some at a garage sale one day and we've been using them every year since. Use a clean 1-dozen egg carton to store the eggs in. You can make your own Resurrection Eggs to share with your family this Easter.

My daughter-in-law walked into a furniture store and talked the manager into giving her a 20% off the top discount on all furniture purchased that day – since she was buying a lot. Garage sales – need I say more? The lady ahead of me in the line at Walmart mentioned that the frozen pretzels she was buying were $3.00
