My husband and I both want our kids to be creative and to use their imaginations. While I appreciate the thought, those toys don’t get used often, and I feel bad donating them or giving them away. If something is cheap at a garage sale, I may buy it even if I’m not sure that I’ll use it.

We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). Bring in your slightly used, but in good shape costume and pick one from those others brought in – as a swap. Encourage your child to use their imaginations to come up with a costume out of materials on hand at home.

She also scarfed up any other gift wrap that looked usable, and she stored it carefully away for use the next year. Use paper drop cloth to wrap. I bought a roll in 2011 and have been using it for everything from Christmas wrap to kid crafts to posters to mailing packages every since. Use paper from other sources.

I was introduced to the idea of Resurrection Eggs when my first daughter was very young. I found some at a garage sale one day and we've been using them every year since. Use a clean 1-dozen egg carton to store the eggs in. Also, read John chapter 19.

Because of this, most of us are probably being taken by paying more for products than we could be paying. To keep up we need to learn that negotiation (aka haggling) is acceptable, expected and useful. Garage sales – need I say more? Our culture now seems to be changing. We need to see our role models negotiating.
